Vitamin String Quartet (VSQ) is one of the most popular string ensembles in the world. Derek began studying cello at the age of four under the tutelage of his father Eric Stein. He holds a Bachelors of Music Performance from Arizona State University and a MFA from the California Institute of the Arts. Derek regularly performs with LA modern music collective, wild Up, as well as with The Vitamin String Quartet.
Eric Stein founded the Salina Symphony in 1955, enjoying along and satisfying tenure as Conductor and musical director until 2002. Eric began his career at the age of 22 in his native Ukraine as a conductor of opera and ballet and came to the United States in 1949. He soon became a naturalized citizen of the United States and was involved in the musical fabric of central Kansas for over fifty-five years.
